Local elections: Does your Labour candidates oppose the attacks on democracy and free speech?

With a number of local elections in the pipeline, we suggest that comrades take an active approach by asking their local Labour Party candidates some important political questions. Ideally, please try to organise local hustings events. Below, we are publicising the names of the first few candidates who have pledged to campaign on the issues mentioned below.

Dear Labour Party Candidate

Please consider signing the following statement opposing the attacks on democracy in the Labour Party. All those who sign will be featured on website and social media of Labour in Exile Network, which will call on everyone who opposes the attacks on democracy to offer them full and active support in the coming elections. Please send your reply to info@labour-in-exile.org.

Best wishes,

CANDIDATE’S COMMITMENT TO OPPOSE ATTACKS ON DEMOCRACY AND FREE SPEECH

As a candidate standing/hoping to stand for the Labour Party in the coming elections I publicly declare that I oppose the attack on democracy and free speech by the current leadership and demand that the leader and the National Executive Committee:

  • Commission an independent review of all previous suspensions and expulsions imposed during the previous leadership;
  • Radically reform the complaints and disciplinary processes of the party to one based on natural justice and due process;
  • Immediately restore the right of constituency parties and members to freely discuss and pass motions on any political issues that they see fit, including the IHRA’s working definition of antisemitism and the report published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
